Abu Dhabi Begins Issuing Residential Parking Permits

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport have begun charging parking fees in residential areas against the issue of permits which are valid for a year. The areas first covered under what has been locally called the Mawaqif's roll out plan 2010 is between Hamdan Street, Shaikh Zayed the First Street, Airport Road and Baniyas Road, starting from January 30.

The Department of Transport has set up a Mawaqif Customer Service Centre on Hamdan Street that is now accepting applications for resident permits for those residing in the E3 sector. These residential permits will allow drivers to park in any available standard parking bay in the area where they reside by displaying the permit on their vehicle’s dashboard. Permit holders will also be exempted from paying hourly or daily tariffs at parking meters. The permit is available to owners or tenants and their family members. A maximum of two permits per household has been allowed. Each permit remains sector and vehicle specific, and will need to be updated if the residence or vehicle is changed.

Documents required to obtain the resident permit are the following: (1) passport copy with valid residency visa; (2) lease of contract or residency ownership proof; (3) last electric bill; (4) vehicle ownership; (5) relationship proof for the vehicle owner if different from the tenancy contract. The yearly fees for the resident permits are Dhs 800 for the first vehicle and Dhs 1200 for the second vehicle. At present, the processing and verification of resident permits is taking a minimum of three working days.
